Marton Walkers

Come and join Marton Walkers!

Written by Jane Hampson

Do you love walking through the beautiful Warwickshire countryside?  Is it your New Year’s resolution to get some fresh air and exercise?   Then why not join Marton Walkers, which is a group of Marton and further afield residents who meet on the final Sunday of each month to enjoy a 2 hour walk around the local countryside.  We meet at 10.00am at a different local pub each month before walking a circular route of approximately 5 miles along footpaths and quiet roads.  Upon returning to the pub the walkers either have a meal and drink or leave to return home.  We take it in turns to organise the walk and each January the whole group has a Sunday lunch outing to Hilltop Farm at Hunningham to arrange the dates and organisers for the following year’s programme.

Marton Walkers currently has about 25 members of varying ages and we would always be delighted to welcome new recruits.   There is no membership fee, you don't have to live in Marton and you don’t have to commit to attending any number of walks in the year – you can just join us for one or two.   Dates for 2011 were set at the AGM at Hilltop Farm on 30 January and these are:

27 March, 17 April, 22 May, 26 June, 31 July, 21 August, 25 September, 23 October, 27 November

If you are interested in attending any of the walks please contact please contact Mike Johnson to receive details of where to meet: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or tel: 632960

Marton Walkers - August 2010

Written by Jane Hampson

In August the Marton Walkers did a re-run of the walk that had to be abandoned in January due to a flooded river.  The walk started from the Stag at Offchurch.  We entered into Offchurch Bury and walked through to, and this time successfully crossed, the Leam river.  The group then made their way towards Newbold Comyn.   We skirted the golf course briefly before heading towards the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust woods and walking a circle to bring us back to the river and into the village again.

In July the Marton Walkers started their walk from nearby Stockton.  We started the walk by crossing fields on the edge of the village before walking through some woods to join the canal.  The group then made their way to Long Itchington.  Upon reaching the village we walked through the centre before going down Thorn Way to use the Millennium Way to cross fields to join the canal again.  We walked up the canal to the Blue Lias pub where we made our way towards the adjoining fishing lakes.  A further walk across more fields brought us back to the pub in Stockton.

Marton Walk - May 2010

In May the Marton Walkers started their walk by joining in with the “Big Breakfast” that was being held in the village hall.  Nine of us feasted on a “Full English” before setting off on a two and half hour walk around the local area in beautiful sunshine.

We started the walk by joining the footpath that crosses the fields opposite EIms Farm on the Oxford Road.  Upon reaching the Fosse Way we crossed the road and followed the footpath across three more fields, eventually ending up in the garden of the Woodhouse Hotel in Princethorpe.  We then walked up Burnthurst Lane and went into the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust wood to see the final bluebells of the season.   After coming out of the woods we crossed more fields and went through a farm before walking along a footpath through fields that took us into Eathorpe.  We completed our journey by walking through the village, up the lane to Eathorpe Park and finally back into Marton.
